The 31-year-old’s current contract at Stamford Bridge expires in the summer of 2023, with new terms yet to be agreed.
Although Kante is considered one of the world’s best at his position, the France international has struggled with injuries in recent seasons.
According to The Athletic, new United boss Erik ten Hag is pushing for a move for his former Ajax player Frenkie de Jong, who is now at Barcelona while Declan Rice is of interest.
The report says Kante is also being considered for the Red Devils, with the midfielder expected to be made available for a reduced fee due to the short amount of time left on his contract and Thomas Tuchel wanting to change his options at center of the park.
Chelsea boss Tuchel has described Kante as a “key player” for the club but is concerned about the number of games he is missing through injury.
“I think he’s our key, key player, but key players have to be on the pitch,” said Tuchel earlier this month.
“He only plays 40 per cent of the games and it’s perhaps a miracle that we finish third because he’s our Mo Salah, he’s our Van Dijk, he’s our De Bruyne. He’s just that player, he’s our Neymar, our Kylian Mbappe.
“He’s the guy who makes the difference, if you only have him 40 per cent it’s a huge problem.
“With that percentage, it’s amazing how consistently we’re getting results and putting everything in perspective. I saw Liverpool with Van Dijk last season and they struggled a lot. You see the difference, N’Golo is our key player and he has to be on the pitch.’
