Chelsea may have lost their European title on Saturday night, but the Stamford Bridge club at least benefited from Real Madrid’s Champions League final win over Liverpool.

Chelsea’s reign as European champions ended when Real Madrid defeated Liverpool in Paris to become the new Champions League champions.

Vincius Junior’s second-half goal was enough to separate teams in the French capital as Real Madrid clinched a record-breaking 14th Champions League title and lifted their second trophy of the season after the La Liga title.

For Liverpool, the 1-0 defeat means an excellent season ends in disappointment as Jurgen Klopp’s side fail to add either Champions League or Premier League titles to their previous FA Cup and EFL Cup successes.

A Real Madrid win was certainly the best result for Chelsea, who not only saw their Premier League rivals lose but also raked in a healthy windfall thanks to a clause in Eden Hazard’s transfer.

The Belgium striker joined the Bernabeu in 2019 in a deal that initially cost £88.5m but included several add-ons that could take the full price to more than £130m.

Chelsea raked in almost £20m when Hazard helped Real Madrid win La Liga and qualify for the Champions League in 2020 and a similar sum will reportedly go to Stamford Bridge following Madrid’s Champions League win.

The Blues are still getting paid, despite Hazard having barely played for Real Madrid this season and playing no part in Saturday’s final.

Former Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was Real Madrid’s hero in Paris, with Hazard’s Belgium team-mate making a series of brilliant saves and winning the Player of the Match award.

Meanwhile, Carlo Ancelotti celebrated his Real Madrid side after beating Liverpool and winning another Champions League win.

He said: “I can’t believe it. We had a fantastic season. We did really well. It was a difficult game and we suffered a lot, especially in the first half. In the end I think we deservedly won this competition.

“We are really happy. What can I say? I can’t say more. I’m a record man. I was lucky to come here last year and had a fantastic season. A fantastic club, a really good squad with a lot of quality and mental character.

“The season was great. I think we went through really difficult games. The fans helped us a lot in the last game. You helped us tonight. We are happy and they are happy.”

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp added: “No one in the dressing room feels like it’s been a great season at the moment. We might need a few hours for that.

“We played a good game, not a perfect game. I don’t think a perfect game is possible against an opponent who is set up with a deep formation.

“We had a lot of shots, but not the clearest. Courtois made two top saves. We conceded a goal after a throw-in. Valverde wanted to shoot, Vinicius was there and that was it.’
