The west London club will be sold outright to Todd Boehly’s consortium, ending sanctions that have prevented them from making transfers or starting contract negotiations.
Coach Thomas Tuchel’s first port of call is to bring in several new defenders after the departures of Antonio Rüdiger and Andreas Christensen, who are free transfers, have left the back numerically weak.
But the German coach also has serious question marks over his attacking options after a disappointing campaign in front of goal with a midfielder Mason Mount is the club’s top scorer.
The likes of Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner – among others – are believed to be up for sale and RB Leipzig’s in-form attacking midfielder Nkunku has been mooted as a potential target.
But now The Athletic claim there is one attacker Chelsea want even more to sign: Romelu Lukaku’s old Inter winger Martinez.
The 24-year-old scored 21 goals in Serie A last season and had developed an excellent, almost telepathic, relationship with Lukaku over the previous two seasons.
Lukaku was only able to score eight goals in his debut season in the Premier League but it would be hoped a Martinez reunion could help the Belgian secure his whopping £97.5million prize.
Unfortunately for Chelsea, the Argentine won’t come cheap as Inter loathe losing their top scorer – although the Blues’ pursuit could be spurred again by the Serie A side’s need to sell a marquee player.
In a bid to uphold financial fair play and strengthen themselves in other areas of the pitch as well, Inter have resigned themselves to conceding against a big player this summer, just as they did with Lukaku a year ago.
They would prefer not to lose Martinez – and it’s possible they could benefit from someone else like Alessandro Bastoni instead – while Inter are reportedly wanting up to €80m (£68m) for the striker.
For his part, Martinez is happy to have settled at Inter and the Italian side are yet to receive a concrete offer – although Chelsea’s hands are still tied until their sanctions are lifted.
Spending that much on Martinez would dilute how much Tuchel can spend on defenders and Nkunku is seen as a cheaper alternative, while Chelsea will push for a move for Sevilla’s Jules Kounde once they are allowed to resume business.
