Nkunku, 24, has been a revelation in the Bundesliga this season, scoring 20 goals and providing 13 assists in 34 games.
The Frenchman’s contract expires in two years and he is believed to be negotiating a new deal with his current club.
However, according to Goal, Chelsea are confident they can disrupt talks and tempt Nkunku with a move to Stamford Bridge.
But the west Londoners will have to fight back against Real Madrid, who are believed to be stalking him as well.
Nkunku is highly rated by Ralf Rangnick at Manchester United, who was reportedly shocked to learn his own scouting department wasn’t eyeing the striker.
Nkunku, who was named Bundesliga Player of the Year, would be an attractive option for the Blues, whose attacking players have struggled this season.
Players like Christian Pulisic, Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech have failed to secure a regular place in Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
Meanwhile, Romelu Lukaku has scored just eight Premier League goals since joining Chelsea from Inter Milan last summer.
After Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger confirmed they would be leaving the club on a free transfer, it was thought much of Chelsea’s focus in the summer window was on defence.
However, poor performances in attack in the second half of the season highlighted problems in the team’s attacking areas.
In his speech last week, Tuchel suggested signing new strikers this summer.
He told reporters: “If we stick to the group, we will try to solve it with these players. Is it necessary to bring more attacking players to the box to create more distraction to create more space for each other?
“The numbers we’re producing from our attacking players don’t allow us to overperform and we need overperforming if we want to be closer to the top two teams.
“I’m not pointing fingers, I’m not blaming anyone, but we need an overperformance from everyone. It’s not an overachievement if we only have single-digit goals and assists.”
