Champions League: Rio Ferdinand dismisses Michael Owens Liverpool lawsuit | Soccer

After such a promising season, Jurgen Klopp’s side had to console themselves with a domestic cup double after a painful night in Paris.
The Reds dominated for a long time but couldn’t find a way past an inspired Thibaut Courtois, who made nine saves en route to earning Man of the Match.
A week after Liverpool narrowly missed out on the Premier League title, Liverpool finally had to calculate the cost of a less-than-clinical finish when Vinicius Junior’s lone goal gave Real their 14th Champions League title.
Despite missing out on the two biggest prizes in English and European football, Owen believes Liverpool still deserve the nickname of the best team on the continent.
He told BT Sport: “I don’t think he (Jurgen Klopp) would change much in the way he approaches the game, that sometimes happens in football.
“I still think they are the best team in Europe I really do. On other occasions, this time Liverpool would have their name engraved on the trophy.
“In the season they had they are still the team to beat. Yes, Real Madrid beat them, but you know as well as anyone that a once-in-a-lifetime game is a once-in-a-lifetime game, that’s what it is.
“I still think they’re the scariest team in Europe and they don’t have either of the big two trophies to their credit for that and that’s going to be the biggest pill to swallow.”
However, Owen’s former Manchester United team-mate and international team-mate Ferdinand argued that for all their superlative football, Liverpool have underperformed this season.
He said: “I don’t think they are the best team, you have to win the big trophies to be seen as that. I think they are an incredibly exciting team, their intensity, the points they have this year, their consistency.
“They’ve played in every single game that’s been available to them, but you need to get your hands on the trophies to be called the best team in Europe.
“I don’t think they can be viewed like that and that would be disrespectful to a side like Madrid who have done what they did to the other best teams in Europe.
“They beat all of our top three teams in our league, they got rid of them and got their hands on the trophy.”
