Michael Owen made his prediction for the Champions League final supporting the ‘extraordinary’ Liverpool to ‘blow away’ Real Madrid and be crowned European champions for the seventh time.
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool meet Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid in the 67th Champions League final in Paris on Saturday night.
While they narrowly missed out on the Premier League title against Manchester City, Liverpool have had a brilliant season and are looking to lift their third trophy of the year after victories over Chelsea in the EFL and FA Cup finals.
Liverpool won the last of their sixth Champions League titles in 2019, a year after Klopp’s side lost to Real Madrid in the final.
Madrid have continued to impress this season, winning the LaLiga title and enjoying a miraculous run to the Champions League final.
The Spanish side, who will be looking to win the record-breaking 14th Champions League, appeared to be beaten by Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Man City but defeated all three clubs to advance to another final.
Despite Real Madrid’s brilliant run, former England striker Owen expects Liverpool to triumph in this weekend’s spectacle and says the Premier League giants should be ‘too good’ for the La Liga winners.
“I think Liverpool are better than Real Madrid and they could knock them out. 3-1 or 3-0 is my guess,” said Owen, who played for both clubs.
“I think they could beat them reasonably convincingly because they are an exceptional side at the moment and too good for Madrid.”
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Owen added: “Real Madrid just did phenomenally well to get through to the final.”
“I’m sure they think their name is on the title which has to do with breaking through the group stage and then of course Chelsea were amazing how they pulled through that. Manchester City were just amazing how they beat them too.
“But I think Liverpool are so experienced and so good. They won’t want to mess with them because I think Madrid are the ultimate team when it comes to know-how and close games.’
“I think Liverpool will probably have a lot of possession because I think Madrid will be interested in preventing spaces behind them that players like Mo Salah and Sadio Mane can run into,” said the 42-year-old.
“But I also think they want to sit deep to actually encourage Liverpool to play that high line and then try to exploit it on the counterattack.
“Any opponent will look at Liverpool and think how we can beat them is try to get behind them.
“If Trent Alexander-Arnold goes up front, they have Vinicius who could really hurt Liverpool in that position.
“Everyone does the same thing and everyone tries. Whether you can really do that is another matter. No question Madrid will be looking at Liverpool’s highline, they’ll be looking a lot at Trent going forward and they’ll think Vinicius will be a weapon.
“I think Ancelotti will try to uncover that area and Vinicius will be one of their key components. Benzema is of course in great form but I think it’s behind him and Vinicius’ pace that they could try to exploit.
“Liverpool are definitely playing very similarly, similar formation and I don’t think there will be any surprises from Liverpool. They will play exactly how they normally play, and it’s usually good enough to win.
“Real Madrid want it to be more of a tactical thing and I definitely expect them to be a counter team.”
