BOSTON (WHDH) — The Celtics begin training camp today with interim head coach Joe Mazzulla.
“Joe has been here in good and bad times, he knows and understands us as players,” said Marcus Smart.
The players said on Monday they had not been informed of head coach Ime Udoka’s one-year suspension.
“How did I find out? … On Twitter like everyone else,” Jayson Tatum said.
The news broke in one go last Wednesday ESPN report in which sources told ESPN that Udoka had a relationship with a woman in the organization that violated team rules. The players said the team met the next day and Celtic’s leadership spoke on Friday but gave few details to the public and players.
“We were all shocked at what was going on, a bit confused,” Jaylen Brown said.
“We were caught off guard like everyone else,” Smart said.
Much of the focus will now be on Mazzulla at training camp this year, including Brad Stevens, who served as the team’s head coach from 2013-2021. Stevens said he believes Mazzulla has it covered, but is willing to help.
“It’s just learning from last season and then how we’re going to get better,” Stevens said. “So I really rely on the relationships I’ve built over the three years here.”
The Celtics sound confident they will make it to the Finals again to bring home an 18th Championship banner.
“We understand the opportunity we have ahead of us, this is a very special group, we have a really good group, a lot of high expectations,” said Al Horford.
