The slap can be heard around the world. Will Smith stunned the star-studded audience – and everyone watching at home – when he took the stage and smacked his lips Chris Rock over the face after the comedian made a “joke” about it Jada Pinkett-Smith‘s hair loss at the Oscars 2022 on Sunday March 27th.
“Jada I love you,” the comedian said from the stage, quipping, “GI Jane 2She can’t wait to see it,” referring to the actress’ head spinning GI Jane star Demi Moore wore a similar style. (Pinkett Smith, 50, has often been candid about losing her hair to alopecia.)
When the camera cuts to the Smiths, the King Richard Star, 53 – who went on to win the Best Actor Oscar – seemed to smile at Rock’s joke, while Pinkett Smith rolled her eyes intensely. Though it initially seemed like Smith was okay with the joke, he quickly got onstage and banged the longest yard actor, 57, across the face. Returning to his seat, he yelled, “Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth.”
“Wow. Will Smith just blew me away,” Rock said to the audience before presenting the Best Documentary award again.
For its part, the Fresh Prince of Bel Air Alum later referenced the altercation in his speech while accepting his Oscar, and apologized for it King Richard.
“Oh man. Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family,” Smith said, attributing his behavior to that of serena and Venus Williams‘ Father, the role he played in the film. “I am called in my life to love people and protect people and be a flow for my people. I know what we’re doing, you have to be able to take abuse. You have to be able to get people talking crazy about you. In this business you have to be able to be disrespected by people. And you gotta smile, you gotta pretend that’s okay.”
That 7 pounds The actor also apologized to several people for his behavior — though not specifically to Rock.
“I would like to apologize to the Academy. I would like to apologize to all my fellow candidates,” he added. “Art imitates life: I look like the crazy father. Just like they said about Richard Williams. But love will make you do crazy things.”
He later apologized in a lengthy statement directly to the presenter the following day. “I want to apologize to you publicly Chris,” Smith wrote via Instagram on March 28. “I was out of line and I was wrong. I’m embarrassed and my actions were no indication of the man I want to be. In a world of love and kindness there is no place for violence.”
