A Greek man jailed for suffocating his wife in front of her little girl was attacked by an inmate who wanted to kill him, it has been reported.

Babis Anagnostopoulos, 34, was serving a life sentence for the murder of 20-year-old Caroline Crouch at her home in an affluent part of Athens in May last year.

He put a pillow on her head as she slept nearby with 11-month-old Lydia before staging the crime scene to make it appear they had been attacked by a gang of violent burglars.

The pilot told investigators he was bound and gagged by three Albanians, who made off with £40,000 in cash and jewellery.

But his story faltered when they found data on his smartwatch proving he’d been pacing from his attic and basement.

The alleged prison attack came just weeks after Anagnostopoulos was sentenced to life and just days after he was transferred from a maximum security prison in Athens to another facility in central Greece.

According to his lawyer, Alexandros Papaioannidis, the guards narrowly managed to pull the inmate out before inflicting more serious injuries.

Mr Papaioannidis told The Sun: “He reportedly said: ‘I want to kill him. I came from another prison. I was looking for him” are true.

“He’s very concerned that the new prison houses around 900 felons and is very tough, very tough.”

Local media reported that Anagnostopoulos had pleaded not to be transferred, citing death threats and security concerns.

He is said to have spent his first days in the new prison in solitary confinement before being put in a cell with three other convicts.

The killer, who admitted to the crime last June, will appeal his sentence, claiming the judges were wrong to dismiss his claim that he acted “in the heat of the moment” after an argument with Caroline over their daughter .

He will also argue that the couple’s marriage counselor’s testimony should be dropped because she is not “qualified” to give it.

The judges agreed that the 34-year-old was “conscious of his actions” during the murder. Caroline Crouch: Greek husband who murdered Brit beaten up in prison
