A Carlsberg director has been fired after successfully organizing a piss-up at a brewery, a labor court has heard.
Martin Entwistle invited eight friends over for a beer in the taproom in the summer of 2020 when strict Covid regulations were enforced due to a ‘vulnerable’ staff member.
The hearing was told he gave his maskless friends a late-night “tour” of Hackney’s London Fields Brewery after dinner and drinks, which devolved into “rollball, alcohol-fueled horseplay”.
After the party, several employees raised concerns about his behavior, leading to a disciplinary investigation.
It emerged that Mr Entwistle had shown “ignorance” of social distancing guidelines and “failed to control his friends’ behaviour”.
He was told his behavior was “unbecoming” for a CEO and was sacked for gross misconduct after their antics were caught on CCTV.
The former employee, who now runs online retailer All About The Beer, then filed suits for wrongful dismissal and breach of contract against Carlsberg, saying enforced rules were delivered in an email as “nothing more” than “guidelines.”
Mr Entwistle acknowledged that bringing a group into the brewery was “wrong” but claimed it caused “no danger or risk to staff or visitors”.
But the tribunal dismissed his claims, saying the regulations were “clear and unequivocal” as mandatory rules rather than voluntary guidance.
“Mandatory guidelines” enforced in June included that “no one” would be allowed on the brewery premises “unless there was an emergency.”
“This also includes when the bridal team is not working and should generally be the case regardless,” the rules added. London Fields Brewery was shut down by Carlsberg in December last year after it decided to sell the brand.
