Candidates attend events as early voters head to the Broward polls

HALLANDALE BEACH, Florida. – Signs were put up at 23 locations in Broward County early Saturday morning as polling stations opened for early voting in the Aug. 23 primary.

In Miami-Dade and Broward, voters will cast their ballots in over 75 different elections, ranging from local referendums to elections in the Senate and State House of Representatives and primary elections for the US House of Representatives.

The Democratic primary for governor is one of the most contentious races.

Candidate Nikki Fried spoke to voters in Broward County.

“[We have to]make sure that we elect a Democrat who’s been a Democrat since she was 17,” Fried said. “Someone who has won nationally as a Democrat and has been running against Ron DeSantis as the only (Democratic) member of the Florida cabinet for three and a half years.”

Her opponent, former Gov. Charlie Crist, attended an event in North Miami on Saturday. The Republican-turned-Democrat has largely led the primary. He has positioned himself as the candidate best suited to face DeSantis in November.

“We need a change in Florida, DeSantis has been a disaster,” Crist said.

Other bitter race takes place in State Senate District 35. Current Senate Minority Leader Lauren Book faces a challenge from former Broward Mayor Barbara Sharief.

The two Democrat women have traded barbs, with Sharief taking it too far Sue Book through a claim made in an advertisement.

Book campaigned outside polling stations on Saturday, mentioning her priorities.

“To protect our children as our children go back to school in Broward County next week,” Book said. “Keep them safe while they’re there. We know we have a teacher shortage. 9,000 vacancies for teachers.”

Sharief says her priorities are helping people who are “hurt” at the moment.

“The rent is too high, the gas is too high, they think about health care,” Sharief said. “(We need) access to health care in our black and brown communities.”
