Cameron Smith has made his first big step as captain of his all-Australia team for the LIV Golf season, signing young Queenslander Jed Morgan at the expense of veteran Wade Ormsby.
The herald can reveal that world No. 4 Smith has recruited fellow countryman Morgan as the fourth member of his Rippers squad ahead of the season opener in Mexico.
The swap has seen 42-year-old South Australian Ormsby frozen out of the strong Smith team who will start among favorites for the 2023 LIV season.
According to sources who spoke on condition of anonymity, Smith invited former Australia PGA winner Morgan to his team after the 23-year-old broke out on a spark in mid-2022 to end the LIV season strong.
Morgan is ranked 351 in the world, 82 places higher than Ormsby, who was one of the first players to join the controversial Saudi-backed league when it was formed last year.
The decision will be difficult for Ormsby given the wealth of Greg Norman’s Rebel League, which awarded each member of Australia’s team $2.9 million for finishing second in the season finale in Miami last year.
Smith spearheaded second place behind Dustin Johnson’s 4 Aces side and has retained Marc Leishman and Matt Jones as teammates in 2023.
Morgan finished last year’s LIV season as part of Joaquin Niemann’s Torque team, but the Chilean has since brought in Mito Pereira, who blew a last-hole lead in the PGA Championship, and Presidents Cup star Sebastian Munoz after they defected from the PGA Tour.
