This is the hair-raising moment a man was rescued from a 500-foot American cliff in dangerously high winds.

Footage shows rescuers rushing to the aid of the topless man who fell from the top of the Mussel Rock coastal trail near San Francisco and was clinging for life.

A local fisherman alerted the California Highway Patrol (CHP) after seeing him “hanging on a vertical cliff face” just after 5 p.m. Thursday.

Due to the precarious situation, ground rescuers could not find him.

Struggling with difficult conditions, the helicopter closes in on the man stuck halfway up the cliff.

“He grabbed me, which made him dangerous,” paramedic David Arias told ABC7 News. “If I had swung away from him, he might have fallen off the cliff.

“I told him to stay on the cliff, he was able to buckle up and help me out.”

Mr. Arias is filmed quickly putting a rescue harness on the man, who was wearing only shorts and no shoes.

With his feet dangling hundreds of feet off the ground, he was flown to safety nearby.

“We had to do a quick search, we weren’t sure where he was on the cliff, we couldn’t see him,” said pilot Brent Marker.

“He was in a very precarious place, 500 feet down a 900 foot cliff. We were fighting 30-40 knots of wind.”

No injuries were reported and miraculously the man escaped with only scrapes and bruises. He was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

A statement from CPH on their Facebook page read: “Amazing work by our flight operations crew in Daly City yesterday after a man fell from the top of the cliff and was clinging to the cliff side for his life.

“To give you an idea of how good the crew is, the pilot was able to get the flight officer/medic to the spot with precision while battling 40-knot winds.

“The precise movements were controlled by a flight officer who stood outside the aircraft and could guide the lowered crew member exactly where needed.”
