California: Double amputee stabs man before being shot by cops

A double amputee who was shot by police while limping away on his stumps had just stabbed a man to death, new video released by police shows.

Anthony Lowe Jr., 36, was fatally shot by police on January 26 after allegedly refusing to let go of a 12-inch butcher knife.

Huntington Park, California police released additional footage from the day of the shooting. One of the clips showed Lowe at an intersection attacking a man with a knife.

Another video shows three police officers following Lowe, still holding knives and pointing their guns at him. The suspect then falls to the ground.

Police released the new clips a week and a half after the shooting.

“I recognize the need for answers and the urge to jump to judgment, but we must allow peace and patience to guide us through this process,” said Huntington Park Police Chief Lozano.

A video police released last week showed Lowe on the ground limping off his wheelchair as two officers approached him. The cops first tried to stab Lowe with a knife in his hand, but he was unaffected. A third officer enters the frame and about 15 seconds later the cops fire multiple shots at Lowe.

The twice amputee father of two was shot about ten times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lowe’s family has announced they will be filing a wrongful death lawsuit against the city, also alleging civil rights violations.

“There is absolutely no reason to shoot a double amputee 11 times in the back who was limping from officers,” said Annee Della Donna, an attorney for Lowe’s family, of the footage.

Police also played the dispatch audio of the initial 911 call Monday, which described a black man in a wheelchair stabbing a person.

Lowe lost his legs in an altercation with police officers in Texas about five months ago.

His mother, Dorothy, said, “I wouldn’t wish on any mother to endure that feeling of seeing this video and not getting any responses from the justice system.”

The three officers were not named and have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office.
