Businesses and attractions recommend masks as COVID cases surge in STL region

ST. LOUIS — St. Louis City and County is issuing strong recommendations that residents wear masks in public indoor spaces.

City and county officials are calling the number of new COVID hospitalizations “alarming.” In the past seven days, the city and county broke the CDC threshold of 200 cases and 10 hospitalizations per 100,000, placing the area in the high transmission category.

This data is prompting some businesses and public places to bring back their indoor mask requirements. Schnucks markets are requiring employees and clerks at its St. Louis and St. Louis County stores to wear masks. Customers are not required to wear masks, although Schnucks strongly recommends them. The Gateway Arch now requires staff and visitors to wear a mask in all Arch rooms and exhibits.

“We have masks available. There are a lot of people who kind of forgot about this necessity and don’t have them with them, so we have them available for visitors who forgot them at our reception,” said Pam Sanfilippo , Gateway Arch program manager.

Doctors say the coronavirus will remain in circulation as long as it has a way to replicate.

“We’re very fortunate that the strain of the virus that’s circulating now isn’t causing a huge amount of serious disease, so I think one of the takeaways from that is that it’s spreading and, I know anecdotally… Some of them have turned positive on.” tested for COVID, and that appears to be more so than at any other time during the pandemic,” said Dr. Alex Garza, St.Louis Metropolitan Pandemic Task Force.

St. Louis City and County Health Departments also strongly recommend wearing masks in crowded outdoor locations where social distancing is not possible.
