Buffalo: Woman gives birth at home amid snowstorm with video chat help
A woman who went into labor amid the massive snowstorm that hit Buffalo gave birth to her baby with the help of doulas over video chat at home.
Erica Thomas went into labor two days before Christmas at her upstate New York City home, which was placed under a state of emergency during the storm.
Snow piled up halfway down Thomas’s door, making it impossible for them to walk and go to a hospital, her husbandDan Thomas told CNN. She called 911 and dispatchers said they would send an ambulance, but later reiterated that responders could not reach her home.
Von soon realized they would have to deliver the baby at home and called his friend, who posted on a Buffalo Facebook group that the couple was looking for help. A doula, Raymonda Reynolds, was among the people who offered help and video chatted withDavid to teach him what to do.
“Can I brag real quick my husband is the goat he actually was on video chat with a nurse and a doula and gave birth to our baby girl at home .
Von wrote on the same day, “When life puts you in certain situations you have two choices, crumble or master the f***.”
On Christmas Day, Erica shared a picture of her baby named Devynn Brielle Thomas. She was born at 3:31 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
Reynolds told CNN she could hear Erica in labor and kept telling her to take a deep breath.
“I tried to keep her calm and calm her down,” she said.
Reynolds added her friend, nurse, and fellow doula Iva Blackburn to the call, and “she brought that extra comfort with the medical background.”
At around 3 p.m., the doulas advised them to use a flashlight to look at the baby.
‘The baby is crowned!’ screamed Erica at that moment.
From this, Erica laid towels underneath as she crouched and squeezed, finally shouting, ‘She’s here!’
The doulas instructed the couple to cut the umbilical cord and take postpartum steps.
“I couldn’t have done it without her,” Von said. “It was very comforting to know that they were there.”
