Bruce Willis quits acting after being diagnosed with aphasia, family says – National

Bruce Willis ‘retires’ from acting after being diagnosed with aphasia.
The 67-year-old’s daughter, Rumer, shared on Instagram on Wednesday that her father “had some health issues … which are affecting his cognitive abilities.”
“As a result, and with much consideration, Bruce is stepping down from the career that has meant so much to him,” she wrote in the caption, alongside a photo of Bruce grinning for the camera.
The post was also shared on other family Instagram accounts, including his ex-wife Demi Moore’s account.
The letter, signed by Rumer Willis, Scout Willis, Tallulah Willis, Mabel Willis and Evelyn Willis, and Bruce’s wife Emma Heming Willis and Moore, went on to say that it is “a truly challenging time for our family and we are very grateful for your continuing.” Love, your sympathy and your support.”

According to the Canada-based Aphasia Institute, “Aphasia is a language problem that obscures a person’s inherent competence and impacts most dramatically on conversational interaction (speaking and understanding) and literacy skills.”
The organization says it’s a communication problem, but that people with aphasia understand what’s going on around them even if they can’t communicate well. However, aphasia can lead to deep social isolation due to their inability to communicate with others.
“The easiest way to understand this is to think of yourself in a country where you don’t speak the language. You can’t express yourself, understand others, read or write – but that doesn’t mean you don’t know what to say or communicate,” the institute wrote on its website.
The Mayo Clinic adds that aphasia “typically comes on suddenly after a stroke or head injury. But it can also come gradually from a slow-growing brain tumor or a disease that causes progressive, permanent damage (degenerative).
Bruce, a two-time Emmy winner, fan favorite, and recipient of a Golden Globe Award, has starred in films such as pulp fiction, city of sin, Die Hard, Armageddon and more.
