A Brit has died after feeling unwell while swimming in the sea at a beach in Albufeira, Portugal.

The unnamed tourist, 45, died on September 21 after falling into the sea at Praia do Peneco beach in the Algarve resort, a Portuguese resident says.

Locals sounded the alarm around 1.15pm on Wednesday after hearing reports of a person feeling unwell after leaving the water, according to a statement from the National Maritime Authority.

The woman was treated by paramedics at the scene who attempted CPR but died on the beach.

Her body was then taken to the coroner in Portimão – a nearby port city.

The Algarve is Portugal’s southernmost region and a popular tourist spot, lined with beaches and resort towns including Albufeira.

Around 2.7 million tourists visited the Algarve in 2021.
