Police in Catalonia are investigating the alleged sexual assault of a 19-year-old woman described in the local press as English.

The incident reportedly happened around 4am on Saturday at a nightclub called Input, located in the Spanish city’s Poble Espanyol open-air museum.

The woman was reportedly found in a state of shock with a head wound, cuts and bruises on her knees and her underwear pulled down on a street in Barcelona.

She told the club’s security guards that a rock hit her in the head.

Local news website Crónica Global described the woman as “Anglo-Saxon”, while television station Betevé said they were “English nationals”.

The Mossos d’Esquadra, Catalonia’s autonomous police force, were called to the scene around 5am and the woman was taken to the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona for treatment.

No arrests have been made while the investigation is ongoing.

Officials have not confirmed the nationality of the woman concerned.

Investigators are understood to be looking for two men, some of whom were captured by CCTV.

They are believed to have been able to extract DNA samples from the woman’s underwear.

Despite the lack of arrests, the Catalan nightlife employers’ association – known as Fecasarm – said it would push for the harshest punishment in the case.

Joaquim Boadas, the group’s general secretary, told Betevé: “We will demand the highest penalty in the penal code, so that all these people know that the only way out is jail.”

He said he was concerned the incident could “unfairly tarnish the image of nightlife” in the city.
