A British woman who was raped on a Crete beach says she is “100%” sure her father wasn’t responsible.

She accused police on the Greek island of letting her rapist “walk free” after wrongfully arresting and charging her 62-year-old father.

Yesterday her father, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded not guilty in court in the Cretan capital of Heraklion.

He dismissed allegations of rape, sexual abuse and domestic violence, telling the judge: “I could never rape my own daughter. Nobody could do such a thing. I am not guilty.’

He has been remanded in custody and according to Greek law his trial must take place within the next 18 months.

The man’s 33-year-old daughter, who can also not be named for legal reasons, visited him in court and was seen hugging him before he faced the judge.

She has protested his arrest and has taken to social media to criticize the actions of the police, saying she will not leave Crete without him.

Police arrested the man on Saturday after his daughter reported that she had been raped two days earlier in the town of Malia during an evening.

She admitted to being drunk and said she couldn’t remember anything about her attacker.

Police say her father made suggestive gestures towards his daughter at a bar where they were both drinking last week.

They accuse him of punching her in the face, dragging her to a secluded beach and raping her.

But the woman says her father was back at the hotel at the time of the attack. She told MailOnline: “I can tell you 100 per cent that he didn’t rape me. I live in the UK with my dad, took him on holiday to Greece and he’s the best dad in the world.

“There’s no way he would do something that disgusting. I told the Greek police that, but they just ignore me.’

She said she was 100% confident that DNA samples from the couple and CCTV evidence would clear her father’s name.

Police say surveillance footage shows the woman’s father, dressed all in white, beating and sexually assaulting his daughter.

However, the victim claimed there was a mix-up, adding: “I told them my father was wearing white clothes, not my attacker. But they misunderstood and thought it was my attacker who was wearing white clothes.

“It’s just one example of the mess they made in the investigation.”

In her complaint to police, the woman said an unidentified man stopped and raped her in the early hours of Thursday on a narrow street near a bar where she had previously been drinking with her father.

Coroners told local newspaper Neakriti that the woman was “covered” with injuries consistent with rocks and branches found on the beach.

They said she also had injuries consistent with rape and DNA samples had been collected.
