Argentina confirms first cases of monkeypox in South America

Argentina on Friday confirmed the first two cases of monkeypox in Latin America, the health ministry said in statements.

Spain, England and Portugal are the countries with the most cases in the recent outbreak of this usually mild viral disease outside of its endemic areas, which are typically found in parts of West and Central Africa.

“The outcome of the PCR result of the case in question is positive,” the Health Ministry said of Argentina’s first case, adding that the patient is in good health and people who have been in close contact with the person are under clinical and epidemiological scrutiny . so far without symptoms.

Later in the afternoon, the ministry confirmed another case of a Spanish national who arrived in Argentina on Wednesday and who began developing ulcerative lesions the next day.

“The patient is in good general condition, is isolated and is being treated symptomatically,” the ministry said.

Most of the infections reported worldwide to date have not been serious. Many, but not all, of the people diagnosed in the current monkeypox outbreak were men who had sex with men. Symptoms include fever and rash.

Around 20 countries where monkeypox is not endemic have reported outbreaks of the viral disease, mostly in Europe, with more than 200 confirmed or suspected infections. Britain’s infections hit 106 as a contagious virus sees the NHS 111 ‘overwhelmed’ by PANIC calls
