Rio de Janeiro: Prosecutors have charged three people with the June murders of British journalist Dom Phillips and indigenous expert Bruno Pereira in the remote western reaches of Brazil’s Amazon rainforest.
All are local river people and their motive was that Pereira asked Phillips to photograph them as they passed in a boat, prosecutors said in a statement. The area is a hotspot for illegal fishing and poaching.
Phillips and Pereira had been meeting with indigenous people near the entrance to the Javari Valley indigenous territory, which borders Peru and Colombia, and were traveling back to the town of Atalaia do Norte on the Itaquai River when they were attacked. Their disappearance caused a great deal of international outcry and pressure for action, and with the help of local Aboriginal people, authorities found their bodies hidden in the forest.
Prosecutors presented their indictment on Thursday (Brazilian time) and said two of the men – Amarildo da Costa Oliveira and Jefferson da Silva Lima – confessed to the crime, while testimony suggests Oseney da Costa de Oliveira was also involved, sources said it in the statement .
Pereira had previously had altercations with fishermen when confiscating her catch and had received several threats. He carried a gun and had left the Federal Agency for Indigenous Affairs to teach Aboriginal people how to patrol their land and collect geotagged photographic evidence of crime.
On the day of her murder, Pereira transported such evidence to the authorities in Atalaia do Norte. He was shot three times. Phillips, who was doing research for a book titled How to save the AmazonHe was “only killed because he was with Bruno to ensure impunity for the predicate offense,” prosecutors said.
There has been speculation in the Brazilian press that her killing may have been ordered by the ringleader of an illegal fishing network. Police arrested a fourth man earlier this month when he produced false documents and believed he might be involved in some way, but no charges have yet been filed.
