Bradford has been named Britain’s City of Culture 2025 by Culture Minister Nadine Dorries.

West Yorkshire City beat off stiff competition from Durham, Southampton and Wrexham to win the coveted title.

It took over the title from Coventry, which was able to attract £172m worth of investment after winning the award.

Bradford locals were filmed cheering in the streets after Dorries made the announcement live on BBC’s The One Show.

She said: “Arts and culture should be accessible to all and this prestigious title will help Bradford organize memorable events for communities on their doorstep.

“There has been stiff competition and I thank County Durham, Southampton and Wrexham County Borough for their excellent bids.

“Coventry has shown us the power of the UK City of Culture title to stimulate investment, attract visitors and leave a lasting legacy for local people.”

Coventry were a good sport when Bradford took the title from them

Bradford will now receive £275,000 in seed funding to ensure the city can hit the ground running and get the wheels turning early as it develops its plans for 2025.

This scholarship will help pave the way for a year of cultural activities and events.

For the first time in the history of the UK City of Culture competition, each runner-up will also receive a £125,000 grant for the best parts of their application.

Bradford is a young and vibrant city with a rich heritage and cultural assets such as the Bronte Parsonage, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Saltaire and the National Science and Media Museum.

The jury was struck by the ambition of Bradford’s application, which at its core celebrates the place where people live, the power of diversity and aims to create new opportunities for all.

Martin Sutherland, Chief Executive of the Coventry City of Culture Trust, congratulated Bradford on his win.

He said: “Everyone in Coventry wishes you the best of luck in your own fantastic and impactful year.

“This will be a truly remarkable time for your city and we look forward to helping you prepare to celebrate all that makes Bradford so special in 2025.”
