A boy has been killed in clashes that broke out last night after the World Cup semi-final between France and Morocco.

Riot police had to be deployed in some areas after fans became involved in violent clashes in the streets.

France last night ended Morocco’s historic run in the tournament with a 2-0 win despite a spirited performance from the outsiders.

Police had prevented unrest before kick-off because of the close and complex ties between the two countries.

France is home to more than a million people of Moroccan heritage, a legacy of decades of French rule in parts of North Africa.

Morocco became the first African and first Arab team ever to reach such a advanced stage of the tournament.

The fatal incident occurred in the southern city of Montpellier, local officials said.

An unnamed child was hit by a car after the game and died after being taken to hospital.

Graphic footage shared on social media shows a white vehicle driving through a crowd gathered on a street.

A man partially disappears under the driving car while another is thrown over the hood.

A statement from the local government in Hérault said: “A young boy was brutally hit by a driver this Wednesday night in Montpellier after the World Cup semi-final match.

“Removed to the hospital in an absolute state of emergency, he died shortly after receiving medical treatment.

“My thoughts are with his family and loved ones. The vehicle was found near the scene of the accident and placed under receivership.

“The police investigations are progressing rapidly under the direction of the public prosecutor’s office.”

A video shared by French daily Midi Libre shows fireworks and flares being hurled across a square in Montpellier.

People can be seen taking cover while the projectiles are thrown.

Others were seen in the footage climbing a monument while holding on to red torches.

The result put France just one game away from defending their World Cup crown.

On Sunday they meet Argentina in the final.
