Bostonians protest Iran government after 22-year-old woman killed – Boston News, Weather, Sports

BOSTON (WHDH) — Dozens of Bostonians braved rainy conditions outside the State House to protest the Iranian government.

“It just brought out so much anger and so much pain from all of us,” protest organizer Camilia Taheri said. “We cannot remain silent.”

The Boston protest was just one of 176 protests held across the United States and around the world on Saturday, matching those in Iran over the killing of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. She died in the custody of the Iranian Morality Police for allegedly wearing her hijab incorrectly.

“Women in Iran have been oppressed, our children have been oppressed, they have given up hope,” protester Arezou Goli said. “Iranians’ minds and brains have departed and gone to different parts of the world, including Boston.”

“About three weeks ago they killed a young woman – just because she showed her hair – Mahsa Amini,” said protester Medi Mirnasiri. “That is not right.”

Amini’s death has become a symbol of decades of oppression of Iranian women.

In Iran, too, after Amini’s death, thousands took to the streets and several demonstrators died.

“Protesters were taken away, they were killed in the streets, they turned off our internet so we don’t have a voice to speak to the world,” Taheri said. “So we’re here today to be her voice, to be out there for Mahsa Amini and so many other Mahsa Aminis.

For Iranians living in Boston, it is heartbreaking to see the images from their homeland.

“(It’s very difficult. I wish I was there and I wish I was with the people of Iran and I would also risk my life,” Goli said. “I don’t care.”

“It’s time to end this madness, it’s time to get rid of this evil regime that has been oppressing Iran for over 43 years,” Mirnasiri said. “The world needs to know.”

Organizers are also encouraging protesters to contact their local lawmakers and urge them to tighten sanctions on Iran.
