Boston Public Schools mandate to lift mask with days left in classes – Boston News, Weather, Sports

BOSTON (WHDH) — With just days left in the school year, officials at Boston Public Schools announced they will lift the mask mandate Monday.

Doctor Shira Doron, an infectious disease specialist at Tufts Medical Center, said she’s not sure why it’s taken Boston so long to get to this point.

“I think it’s important to actually end the year on that grade,” she said. “Why should the least risk children be the last to remove their masks?”

dr Doron said that with a 75 percent earlier infection rate among schoolchildren and the ability to get vaccinated, most schoolchildren are protected by their immunity.

BPS has lagged behind many other counties in the state in repealing mask mandates. City officials said the decision came after a two-week drop in case numbers and hospital admissions across the city.

“We are grateful that we are now at a moment where we can transition to an optional policy, and we will stay tuned for the coming months,” said Boston Mayor Michelle Wu.

Though masking is no longer required, the district said it will continue to recommend masks for anyone who is unvaccinated or for students and staff living with someone who is at high risk of severe COVID-19.

School officials are also urging anyone showing symptoms to mask themselves while following the data.

“We will continue to monitor all numbers very closely,” Wu said. “We will have a tailored approach for the summer school and the next school year.”
