Boston Mayor Michelle Wu Announces $2 Billion ‘Green New Deal’ at Boston Public Schools – Boston News, Weather, Sports

BOSTON (WHDH) — Boston Mayor Michelle Wu unveiled a plan to invest $2 billion to make Boston public schools’ facilities greener.

The plan, which Wu announced Thursday, will involve an overhaul of BPS facilities, beginning with a $605 million investment in the FY23-27 capital plan.

“The Green New Deal for Boston Public Schools is a promise to listen to and restore trust in our communities,” Wu said. “This is a fresh approach with all hands on deck, with new financial resources, planning tools and human capacity to make urgent improvements to our school buildings. With students, families and educators at the table, we will continue to invest so every school can create the healthy, nurturing environments our children deserve.”

Projects in the original capital plan for FY23-27 include 14 new school buildings or major renovation projects and “significant improvements” to athletic facilities at White Stadium. Other district-wide improvements include energy and water efficiency improvements, the installation of solar panels, bathroom and kitchen renovations, school yard improvements, and the installation of water wells and air conditioning.

Wu’s press office noted that only nine new schools have been built in Boston in the past 40 years, leaving many schools in need of previously deferred maintenance.

“Every child deserves a modern, contemporary, and well-resourced learning environment that stimulates their creativity and inspires their enthusiasm for learning,” said Brenda Cassellius, outgoing superintendent of Boston Public Schools. “The city’s commitment to creating 21st-century school buildings and classrooms throughout Boston is an important step forward for our students and families, and for the entire BPS community.”
