Boston City leaders discuss Orange Line shutdown Wednesday night in Chinatown – Boston News, Weather, Sports

BOSTON (WHDH) — Just two days after a month-long Orange Line shutdown, the city of Boston has partnered with the MBTA to hold a public gathering in Chinatown aimed at easing the pain of the closure.

“You didn’t have Chinatown in mind when you came up with this information. Where will the shuttle buses be?” said frustrated commuter Cecelia Cordova.

Originally, the MBTA said Chinatown was one of four Orange Line stops that would not have shuttle buses. However, Mayor Michelle Wu confirmed that the city is working to change that.

“This community is seen and heard and needs to be part of the planning, so we’re very glad they responded to the concerns raised by city councillors, state legislatures and so many of our partners here in the city,” Wu said.

To soften the blow of the shutdown, MBTA plans to add a stop on the Silver Line at the Surface Artery at the Kneeland Street stop.

Adding to the confusion is that the shutdown signs and announcements are only in English.

An MBTA spokesman said riders are encouraged to use the T’s Rider Guide and it will be translated into nine languages.

Wu said they are taking steps to translate signs at shuttle bus stops.

“There will be sandwich boards in different languages, as well as on-site staff who can help guide people to the shuttle buses and help them get their bearings,” Wu said.

Other measures are also being taken.

“We need to communicate effectively in Cantonese in Madeira. Unfortunately, many of our seniors do not have internet. Many of these will knock on the door and provide them with pamphlets,” said Boston City Councilman Ed Flynn.

However, some said the changes are coming too late.

“I’m not happy with this last-minute stuff, and I’m almost sick of it,” Cordova said. “I’m tired of the politicians who know Chinatown has a problem and we always have to scream and yell or it has to be a lawsuit or it has to be a major incident before anything is done.”
