BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Celtics said Friday that Danilo Gallinari tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee while playing for Italy during a FIBA World Cup qualifier against Georgia last month.
Gallinari tied the same ribbon in 2013. The Celtics gave no timeline for the forward’s return. But such injuries usually take up to a year to recover, meaning the veteran is unlikely to play this season.
The Celtics signed Gallinari to a two-year, $13 million contract in July. He averaged 11.7 points for Atlanta last season.
Gallinari, 34, averaged 15.6 points in 13 NBA seasons with the Hawks, New York, Denver, Los Angeles Clippers and Oklahoma City.
Video of the injury shows Gallinari receiving a pass on a quick break and taking a step before starting to limp. In the days that followed, first Gallinari expressed He was diagnosed with a meniscus injury.
in a (n Instagram post Shortly after the team announced his new diagnosis, Gallinari said he would work to return to action as soon as possible.
“This has been a tough week for me as I learned the extent of my injury,” the post reads. “This game means everything to me and it hurts not being able to be on the pitch with my Celtics teammates. I intend to give everything I can for the Celtics organization and my teammates as we chase a title.”
Gallinari had bounced around since being drafted by the Knicks in the first round in 2008 before helping Atlanta stage a surprise Eastern Conference Finals in 2021.
The Celtics were hoping Gallinari and Malcolm Brogdon, another free agency pickup, could bolster their rotation after failing in the NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors.
Gallinari said in July that taking on a reserve role the last two seasons at Atlanta has helped him enter a phase in his career when he is not at the heart of an offense.
“At this point in my career, it was a step I decided to take,” Gallinari said. “It’s something you have to adapt to and you have to be a professional. And whatever needs to be done, you have to do it.”
