Boris Johnson faces a battle to stay in office tonight, with Tory MPs weighing whether to support him in a vote of confidence.

So far, well over 100 have publicly said they will support him – but the vote will be held in secret and some may choose not to support the Prime Minister privately.

He is expected to win the competition, but he needs 180 votes to do so – and the magnitude of any win is crucial to his future prospects.

Allies of Mr Johnson insist he will carry on even if he wins by a vote.

But history shows that prime ministers who survive votes of confidence do not last long, as ex-Tory leaders Theresa May, John Major and Margaret Thatcher show.

Rebels and Johnson allies alike will therefore address the level of opposition to Mr Johnson, whose leadership has been tarnished by the Partygate scandal and who is the first sitting Prime Minister in office to have been found to have broken the law .

Cabinet has rallied behind Mr Johnson, making former Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt perhaps the most prominent Tory to publicly say he will not support the Prime Minister.

The vote will take place this evening between 6pm and 8pm in Westminster. The ballot papers are then counted and the results announced.

If Mr Johnson loses, he will have to resign and there will be a leadership contest. takes you through the main contenders here.

Should he win as expected, current rules dictate that the Prime Minister is safe from another vote for a year – but those rules could in theory be changed.

Depending on the scale of the rebellion, there may also be pressure on cabinet ministers and other key Tories to resign or to urge the prime minister to resign.

Mr Johnson has always insisted he will fight to the end.

Below is a list of the 114 MPs who – at least publicly – say they support him in doing so.
