Boeing’s Starliner returns from the ISS on Wednesday, NASA shares live broadcast details

Boeing’s Starliner capsule is scheduled to undock from the International Space Station and return to Earth tomorrow, May 25, landing at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. NASA has made arrangements to live stream forthcoming return activities for the spacecraft. The spacecraft is said to undock from the space station on Wednesday at 14:36 ET (00:06 Thursday in India). Starliner was launched on May 19 from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida at the start of the Orbital Flight Test-2 mission and successfully docked with the ISS a day later.

Starliner docked alongside SpaceX’s Dragon ship on the space station, marking the first time NASA’s two commercial crew contractors attached capsules to the space station. There were no astronauts aboard the Starliner, which is designed to carry people to and from the ISS. However, Starliner’s unscrewed spacecraft recently carried about 800 pounds of cargo to the space station. Once NASA has certified the spacecraft, it is expected to carry up to four crew members.

Although the Starliner program is years behind schedule, its return to Earth after successfully docking with the ISS is good progress. NASA has scheduled several events ahead of the spacecraft’s landing in New Mexico.

The main events are as follows:

May 24, Tuesday

– 12:55pm ET (10:25pm IST) – Starliner Farewell Ceremony

— 1:30 p.m. ET (11:00 p.m. IST) – Hatch closure coverage begins

May 25, Wednesday

– 2pm ET (11:30pm IST) – TV coverage begins to undock

– 5:45 p.m. ET (3:15 p.m. IST on Thursday) – Coverage begins for the western US landfall

NASA will also hold a post-landing press conference on NASA TV from NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.

Previously, Boeing had scheduled a test flight for 2019 – known as OFT-1 – but it was canceled due to software problems, preventing the spacecraft from reaching the space station. Another attempt in August last year was also canceled due to a technical problem.
