Problematic on TikTok

A TikTok sound talking about women “sleeping with black men in exchange for marijuana” is coming backlash for his blatant racism.

The sound created by a tick tock Account (@gangaffiliation88) the no longer existswas used in over 1,300 Tiktokes. The “joke” of the sound is that if they don’t know where a woman is, some worry that she “might be sleeping with black men in exchange for marijuana.”

Examples of the trend are an August Video by @joce.lyn07, in which she says: “Every time [she thinks] around [her] Besties,” she worries that they “could sleep with black guys in exchange for marijuana”; and one by @andrewtwk2 who says if someone makes him read for “0.27 seconds” he worries they might “sleeping with black people in exchange for marijuana”.

TikToker Jordan Simonewho called other racist TikTok trends done before a video with the TikTok sound in August. In it she asks, “Is it me or do ‘black men’ feel a bit like that too racially motivated for all these non-black people using it?”

Many in the comments on Simone’s video agreed: “It’s definitely motivated,” commented @josieoioioi. “It’s not just you, it’s extremely racially motivated,” wrote @ms.bingb0ng. “They use a new racist sound every month,” commented @purplesprite11.

Why it matters

The TikTok sound is blatantly racist because it implies black men are selling marijuana. Bans on weeds have a special meaning racist story. According to the ACLU, “Blacks are still arrested for marijuana possession more often than whites in any state,” even in states that have legalized weed. In addition, black people are being arrested for “Violating marijuana possession laws“almost four times as often as white people.

So any TikTok sound implying black men selling, trading, or owning weed is racist — and awesome unmusical.

Also, the suggestion that black men either lure women into sleeping with them by using marijuana or simply give marijuana to those who have sex with them is also racist and adds to it Oversexualization of Black men.

the tone is all around problematic and highlights a dark side of TikTok: Bigotry can be played out as a “joke” in the form of a TikTok audio.
