Birmingham pub crash: car wedged in Shannon after losing control

Two people have escaped with only minor injuries after a driver lost control of his car and crashed into a pub.

The Fiat 500 was wedged in the Birmingham beer wall in the early hours of this morning after the crash.

Both women in the car were taken to hospital but are believed not to have been seriously injured.

Pictures show the wall of Shannon’s Pub in Bordesley Green which was demolished following the accident in which the vehicle smashed through the glass window at around 12.30am.

A cordon was in place around the building today with the red tailgate apparently removed.

West Midlands Fire Service Highgate crew, who tweeted photos of the scene, said: “We often attend incidents where a slight change in circumstances such as direction or time could have resulted in tragedy.

“This #RTC (road traffic accident) in #BordesleyGreen today was one of them.

“Fortunately the pub was closed and the two women in the car only suffered minor injuries.”

Firefighters added that the car hit a lamppost before speeding into the pub, which was closed at the time.

Fire chiefs said the pub’s structural integrity was not damaged, the building was secured and the incident was referred to West Midland Police just after 2am.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman added that paramedics treated the two women at the scene before they were taken to hospital.

She explained: “We were called to Bordesley Green, Birmingham at 00:36 this morning to receive reports of a car having collided with a building.

“Two paramedics and an ambulance were on site.

“Two women were evaluated and treated by paramedics for injuries that were not considered serious before being taken to hospital for further evaluation.”
