Biplane overturns in freezing conditions, triggering serious incident

A double-decker bus and a motorcycle were involved in the accident, which took place at 6 a.m.

Avon and Somerset Police say a “significant number of police, fire and ambulance units are on the scene and a major incident has been reported”.

In a tweet, the force added: “The A39 Quantock Road in Bridgwater has been closed due to an overturned double decker bus.

“Officers were called around 6am today (Tuesday 17 January) following the incident involving the road. Emergency services are on site.’

Avon and Somerset Police received more than 100 reports of road-related incidents in a matter of hours last night, most of which were related to “treacherous driving conditions”.

Between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m., 53 accidents were reported. Seven of these resulted in injuries but are not believed to be serious. Another 67 calls were received for other road-related incidents.

The Met Office has said all of England will continue to experience cold weather until 9am on Friday.

Meteorologists have issued a yellow warning for ice in southern England which will remain in place until 10am Tuesday morning, with ice likely to make for difficult driving conditions.

A separate yellow warning for snow and ice is also in effect in Cornwall and Devon until 10am.
