The talks come as the United States and its Western allies have watched a buildup of Russian troops near Ukraine’s border, which has swelled to an estimated 100,000 people and raised concerns that Moscow is preparing an invasion Ukraine.
Foreign Minister Antony Blinken spoke on Wednesday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
State Department spokesman Ned Price said Blinken “reiterates the United States’ unwavering support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity in light of Russia’s military buildup on Ukraine’s borders.”
Price said the two discussed efforts to peacefully resolve the conflict in eastern Ukraine and upcoming diplomatic engagements with Russia.
Earlier this week, Putin said he would consider a range of options if the West failed to meet his push for security guarantees that would block NATO’s expansion into Ukraine.
Earlier this month, Moscow submitted a draft security document asking NATO to deny membership to Ukraine and other former Soviet states, and to back off military deployments in Central and Eastern Europe. .
