WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden, who was recently in focus boost oil production Reducing rising gas costs will draw his attention climate change on Friday when he convenes a virtual meeting of some of the world’s largest economies.
Participants include China, Germany, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and the European Union. Also present is Egypt, which will host the next United Nations Summit on Climate Changeand UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
Known as the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate, the conference was established in 2009 under President Barack Obama.
The White House said the meeting was a “continuation of the President’s efforts to pull all levers to address the global climate crisis.” Senior administration officials, who were not authorized to comment publicly before the event, said Biden will use the opportunity to urge his colleagues to make additional efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Priorities include reducing methane leaks and getting more zero-emission vehicles on the streets.
Officials said they expect some of the countries to announce more ambitious climate targets under the landmark deal reached in Paris in 2015.
but the Russian invasion of Ukraine messed up Biden’s climate goals by driving up gas costs. Given the political pressure to get prices under control an inter-election yearthe Democratic President has urged US oil refineries to produce more fuel.
