Uvalde, Texas – A press conference about the shooting at a Texas elementary school erupted on Wednesday as Democratic gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke blamed Republican Gov. Greg Abbott for inaction ahead of the latest in a long string of mass shootings in the state.
As the Republican governor finished his remarks, O’Rourke approached the stage, pointed to the governor and said, “Your expense.”
“You do nothing. They’re not offering us anything,” O’Rourke told Abbott as a police officer held out his arm as if to stop the contestant from storming the stage. Some on stage shouted back at O’Rourke, and Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin, a Republican, called him a “sick son of a bitch.”
As officers escorted O’Rourke out of the auditorium, some in the assembled crowd taunted him while a woman sang, “Let him speak.” Some people cried.
“That’s up to you until you decide to do something else,” O’Rourke said. “It will continue to happen. Someone has to stand up for the children of this state or they will continue to be killed like they were killed yesterday in Uvalde.”
as Lt. gov. Speaking to Dan Patrick about the need for psychiatric care inside, O’Rourke called for gun control from the parking lot. “If we don’t do something, we’re going to continue to see that,” he said, “year after year, school after school, kid after kid.”
