Bernie Sanders on Davos 2022: The oligarchs celebrate, the poor suffer

Don’t start Bernie Sanders on the subject of Davos.

The independent senator and former presidential candidate from Vermont, who describes himself as a Democratic socialist, has little use for the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in the Swiss city. Dubbed simply “Davos,” the event typically attracts some of the richest and most influential people in the world, including this year’s attendees Bill Gates and George Soros.

But Sanders sees little point in the process. “The oligarchs in Davos celebrate, the poor suffer,” he tweeted in a post that garnered nearly 5,000 likes on Twitter TWTR.

In another tweet, which attracted and counts 11.7k likes, he referenced a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. when he described the “obscene income and wealth inequality” seen today.

Sanders is not alone in his assessment. “Davos” was trending on Twitter this week. And many users, including some of those who responded to his tweets, shared similar views.

And even Chris Talgo, editor-in-chief of website, wrote a piece defends Sander’s comments. Talgo noted that many of the world’s most pressing problems, from “skyrocketing inflation” to “looming global food shortages,” are being ignored in Davos.

“Make no mistake, I rarely, if ever, agree with Sanders,” Talgo wrote. “Nevertheless, I have to say when it comes to his assessment of the recent meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos … we are sympathetic.”

Many climate activists have also questioned the carbon footprint of the world’s richest and most influential people, who flock to Switzerland in droves.

Of course, some have fired back at Sanders in a variety of ways. In particular, some commenters on Twitter pointed out how Sanders recently expressed his approval of the deployment $40 billion in US military and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine in his fight against Russia. One noted that the money “could have fed a lot of Americans.”

Sanders and officials from the World Economic Forum did not immediately respond to MarketWatch requests for comment. Bernie Sanders on Davos 2022: The oligarchs celebrate, the poor suffer
