Actor Benedict Cumberbatch returned as host of Saturday Night Live this weekend, right after his new movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hit theaters. It was Mother’s Day too, so he made sure to praise his mom during the SNL monologue.
That came with some playful banter about his mother’s precious advice when he was younger, which carried him through to his red carpet days as a Hollywood star.
The actor also didn’t shy away from recalling that the Oscars moment with Will Smith isn’t too far removed from everyone’s memory as he poked fun at the King Richard star.
Benedict Cumberbatch’s SNL monologue featured Will Smith’s Oscar joke
SNL viewers last seen Benedict Cumberbatch as the show’s host in 2016 when his first Doctor Strange film was making waves in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He was back for last Saturday’s show, just as the Doctor Strange sequel hit theaters.
Cumberbatch joked during the monologue that the SNL writers and cast mostly suggested sketches for him about his superhero character, but he told them he’d done other films alongside. He mentioned telling SNL boss Lorne Michaels he was in the Oscar-nominated film power of the dog.
“He said, ‘Nobody saw it,'” Cumberbatch said of Michael’s response.
“I said, ‘Come on man, I’ve been nominated for an Oscar,'” Cumberbatch said, waiting for the audience’s applause.
“I mean, I didn’t win. I got hit by Will Smith… No, not physically, not physically,” he said before grinning a little.
Cumberbatch was among the actors attending the 2022 Academy Awards where Smith took to the stage to slap the onstage host Chris Rock. Smith’s infamous slap came after Rock made a joke on stage about Will’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith and her bald look.
After returning to his seat, Smith yelled at Rock to keep his wife’s name out of his mouth. The show went on, and Smith stayed at the venue.
Later in the event, Will Smith returned to the stage when he won the Best Actor award for King Richard. His first Oscar win resulted in many viewers giving him a standing ovation, including Cumberbatch.
After the Oscars, Smith apologized to Rock and resigned from the academy. The academy also banned Smith from attending its events for the next 10 years.
Chris Rock has recently cracked jokes about the incident, including a quick jab about Smith during the Netflix Is a Joke Fest and his appearance on a secret stand up show with fellow comedian Dave Chappelle.
Cumberbatch said his mother gave him valuable advice
After his quick joke about Will Smith’s Oscar incident, Cumberbatch went on to praise his mother, joking that they called each other “weird, funny names.” He called his mother “Pookie” and she called him “Benedict Cumberbatch”.
After joking that he attended a school called “Hogwarts,” Cumberbatch said he wanted to take a moment to thank his mother for everything she’s done for him. With sentimental music playing in the background, he said whenever he had a problem, his mother had a solution.
“For example, when I lost both of my front teeth, I was worried about being teased,” he said, adding, “but you said, ‘It’s okay, just try to smile without opening your mouth.'”
“That’s great advice, but it also explains why I smile so much in every red carpet photo to this day,” Cumberbatch said, as a photo of the actor sporting a goofy, shut-mouthed smile popped up on screen.
“Seriously Mum, you’ve shown me so much love and support every step of the way. I love you Pookie,” he complimented his mother.
In addition to the monologue, Cumberbatch was involved in a variety of sketches, one spoofing his film Power of the Dog. Another showed a mother receiving Mother’s Day gifts with blunt messages.
He was also a two-time Oscar winner Part of a cold opening with a medieval setting and themes such as Roe v. Wade and the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard defamation trial.
