Ben Affleck and Matt Damon drove to Larry Bird’s house once

On Monday night, Bill Walton and Jason Benetti hosted the alternative television show “Throw it Down with Bill Walton” of the headline-grabbing Boston Celtics-Cleveland Cavaliers duel. Aside from the appeal of a duel between the top four teams in the Eastern Conference, Walton is always entertaining, and this time the host pairing was joined by well-known Celtics fan Ben Affleck.
Affleck and Matt Damon are doing the rounds to promote their coming Air film about Michael Jordan’s courtship with Nike, and Affleck told an amusing story about how the two friends once drove to French Lick, Indiana, to see Larry Bird’s house and try to meet Larry – who wasn’t home at the time was.
Aflack admitted that he and Damon had no intention of just dropping into French Lick. He then brought it back to emphasize the level of fan following required for the pseudo-pilgrimage.
“We went and rang the bell. No one responded,” Affleck said. “We took pictures outside. That’s how we were Celtics fans. We watched that VHS tape of ‘Larry Legend’ voiced by Daniel Stern probably 200 times.”
It makes sense that Affleck and Damon weren’t the only fans to show up unannounced to Bird over the past few decades. Still, it’s something else considering they became quite famous themselves, and it would have been interesting to see what would have happened if Bird had been home and welcomed the duo.
