Before-and-after images show Hurricane Ian’s storm surge completely destroyed some hotels on Sanibel Island, Florida – Boston News, Weather, Sports

(CNN) — Many beach shacks that lined Sanibel Island’s shoreline were swept away by Hurricane Ian’s storm surge, new aerial photos from NOAA shows.

Most homes on the islands of Sanibel and Captiva are still standing but appear to have suffered some form of roof damage in addition to certain storm surge and flood damage.

Large scars can be seen in the sand near Casa Ybel Beach Resort – the surf has eroded much of the beach and dunes.

Shalimar Cottages & Motel is gone too. Its 14 cottages and the entire motel building were swept away by the storm. At least four cottages – or what’s left of them – stand on the street.

Mitchell’s SandCastles was also completely destroyed. There are no more buildings and the property is covered with sand.

Only one building remains of the Waterside Inn on the Beach. All that remains of the eight buildings on the property surrounding the swimming pool is rubble.

The roofs of the four buildings that make up Ocean’s Reach suffered significant damage. It’s unclear how it went inside the buildings, but a considerable field of debris can be seen behind the buildings. The covered parking garage behind the buildings was also destroyed.

Although the storm surge no longer covers Sanibel, some homes at the Sanibel Island Golf Club remain submerged.
