Calling all music festival fans, Radio 2 Live 2022 is getting even bigger as it moves out London’s Hyde Park to Temple Newsam Park in Leeds.

The BBC radio station’s annual music festival is set to move north, thereby doubling in size, with more than 20 artists – touted by the BBC as some of the “world’s most popular artists” – to be confirmed in June.

The event, which was previously a one-day festival and has hosted big acts like Elton John, Kylie Minogue, Pet Shop Boys, Take That and Lenny Kravitz, will take place over two days in the sprawling West Yorkshire park on Saturday and Sunday, September 17th and 18th.

It certainly sounds like it would rival the successful annual festivals of Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds and Wireless!

The Radio 2 DJ tent will make its debut, where presenters will “play classic tracks from Motown from the ’60s to the present day”.

DJ Zoe Ball announced the news, saying: “It’s official! The news is OUT and I can tell you the whole Radio 2 family can’t wait to be in LEEDS for R2 Live this year.

“We are ready for two days of dancing and singing along with our fabulous audience and some brilliant live acts. Personally, I’m looking forward to getting my groove on in the Radio 2 DJ tent!’

Jeff Smith, Head of Music at Radio 2, added: “Following our month of brilliant Piano Room performances in February, we are delighted that Radio Live will be taking place in Leeds, one of the great cities in the North. Live music is at the heart of the station so we can’t wait to gather everyone at Temple Newsam for two days of brilliant music and get everyone together to feel great!’

Councilor James Lewis, Chairman of Leeds City Council, commented: “We are incredibly pleased to welcome Radio 2 Live to Temple Newsam and to let the people of Leeds look forward to world-class artists performing on their doorstep.

“Leeds has hosted some of the biggest names in music over the years so it’s great to see the city carry on this proud tradition and to work with the organizers to bring another big and unique event to Leeds.”

Radio 2 Live is broadcast on the network and is available live and on demand on BBC Sounds and BBC iPlayer.

The move is part of the BBC’s ongoing plan to branch out into the north region and away from London.

Music fans could breathe a sigh of relief this year as most of their beloved festivals are back after two years of being canceled due to the Covid pandemic.

Glastonbury are back in June with headliners Billie Eilish, Sir Paul McCartney and Kendrick Lamar, while Reading and Leeds are also back in action this August with the likes of Arctic Monkeys and Dave.
