A server on TikTok is another woman who shared that wearing pigtails brought her more money in tips. Exotic dancers have posted on TikTok that they’ve tried the trick, which has led to more tips, and a Texas Roadhouse server went viral after explaining that wearing the hairstyle to work also made them more money.
TikTok user Scarlett Green (@rescarded) writes in a text overlay on the viral video, “Why do you always wear pigtails to the bartender?” She lip-syncs towards the end of the nine-second video, and replies, “Men are stupid and I don’t respect them.”
She further clarified her point in a caption for the video, writing, “Because old men love a few pigtails and a little country accent more than they should.” She also included the hashtags “#gross…#oldmenarecreepy” in the post.

It seemed that throngs of other TikTokers on the platform agreed and were using the same method themselves.
“Yeah girl, get it. Same haircut tonight at work,” wrote user @browndogbackstitching.
Another user named Monday wrote, “Pigtails and the word ‘y’all’ make a world of difference at the steakhouse I work at.”
“The way I do more than double the max tips when wearing pigtails with a pink lip,” said J.
“I explained to my husband why all the waiters at our local bar were wearing pigtails, he was like WASHAFT???” user Lily Marina said.
While there were many users who acknowledged the undeniable power of the braid to collect tips, many also expressed disdain for male customers who made comments about how much they enjoyed the hairstyle.
“I was told three times today by the same old man at work that he ‘just loves pigtails on girls,'” said commentator Ashlee Fritzler.
Some even said that the height of the braid could also have a dramatic impact on the tips, meaning not all braids are created equal.
“Did you do the high braids? I have a feeling these would be even more effective lol,” one user suggested.
There were other TikTokers that offered other top-notch hacks, like adding some flair to your hair.
“They also have a soft spot for bows. I’ve been making more and more money with my bows,” noted user @PettyPotatoChip.
The Washington Post wrote about this particular pigtail phenomenon, stating that there are numerous servers “sneaked” by this revelation. The article shared the experience of 21-year-old Grace Velez, who said she earned $140 in tips in a single day after putting her hair in pigtails, when she normally earns between $40 and $75.
Several other women who have worked in the hospitality industry have reported similar results, and the article notes that “creepy” men are fascinated by younger-looking girls, with some reportedly even flirting with female employees and asking if they’re still in high school are.
The piece also featured a comment from a Hooters waitress, who said the franchise’s waiters refrain from wearing pigtails because “it sexualizes little girls.”
The idea of ”strategic flirting” is not uncommon in the workplace, and much has been written about the practice in a variety of different industries. However, some have argued that there is a difference between a woman choosing to flirt to manipulate conversations for her own gain or career advancement, and having her boss tell her to be more engaging so male clients spend more.
