According to a recorded call between a Georgia underground lobbyist and her supporters, Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.) called former Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif) on her behalf just before she turned over documents to Nunes staff who falsely claimed Italian satellites helped elect President Joe Biden.
This conspiracy theory, commonly known as “Italygate,” was primarily promoted by Virginia realtor Michele Roosevelt Edwards along with lobbyist Maria Strollo Zack. Georgia public records show that Zack has known Loudermilk for decades.
The theory mistakenly states that an Italian defense contractor helped shift votes in the 2020 election by pivoting them from former President Donald Trump to Biden.
That Washington Post and several other news outlets covered the conference call last year, but the Daily Dot is the first to reveal Loudermilk’s involvement. Loudermilk, it appears, was instrumental in driving the conspiracy up the Republican Party. Zack himself claims to have told Trump about it in Mar-a-Lago in December 2020.
The phone call, which took place on January 4, 2021, is a conspiratorial classic, a nearly hour-long discussion about satellites and computers in Pescara, Italy. It also features one of Zack’s supporters praying to Jesus for a private plane.
During the call, Zack explains that “Barry [Loudermilk] … actually taking me to Devin Nunes was a blessing … he called Devin for me … and that helped a bit.” She continued by saying, “They’re all still waiting for proof.”
On the same day, Nunes was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Trump. Nunes became notorious for his close ties to Trump while he was in Congress and doing his best to thwart investigations into the president’s ties to Russia.
Both Loudermilk and Nunes voted against confirming the 2020 election results in favor of Biden.
Later during the call, an unidentified man named David says, “Rob Adkerson is Barry Loudermilk’s chief of staff… I can ask Rob if Barry will be on Air Force One,” referring to a planned rally for Republican Sens. David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler in Georgia later that night.
In another interview taped January 6, 2021, with online talk show America, Can We Talk? hosted by Debbie Georgatos, Zack said she “broadcast [the Italygate document] to the Devin Nunes staff… who I’ve been speaking to for some time.”
Georgatos was also present on the January 4 call.
The Daily Dot reported last month that Loudermilk told WBHF radio on January 6, 2021 that “about a dozen” people were with him before the riot – after initially veiling his visitors in the Capitol the day before the riot.
The Daily Dot also reported how Zack told host Georgatos that she gave Loudermilk and Nunes a false “affidavit” from Italygate.
Loudermilk, who was asked to testify by the January 6th Committee, revised his story several times in the run-up to January 6th. In a joint statement with the property management committee, he first said, “There were no tours, no big groups, nobody with MAGA hats.” Loudermilk later said he met with “an inaugural family reunion with their member of Congress.” That was later revised again in a video statement released by Loudermilk, calling it “a constituent family and their guests,” who he admitted wore red hats.
It’s unclear if Nunes’ employees provided him with Italygate’s affidavit.
Nunes left Congress last year to become CEO of Trump Media and Technology Group, which runs Trump’s new social media site, Truth Social.
Loudermilk, Zack, Nunes and Adkerson did not respond to requests for comment.
