Barnet: Man arrested for murder after stabbing ‘mother and son, 5’

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman and a five-year-old child – believed to be her son – were found stabbed to death in north London.

The 37-year-old suspect was taken into custody at an address in Brookside South, Barnet, following the incident earlier today.

Scotland Yard said he was known to the victims. A local mother of two said the death scared her.

Mum-of-two Becky, 39, who didn’t give her last name, said of her neighbors: “Oh my god it’s just shocking, it really is.

“Yes, I knew the family, nice, quiet Chinese family, from China. I cried so much, especially earlier when I heard a child was involved, it was devastating.’

Mum-of-two Rummana Chowdhury, 37, said: “I don’t know her, it’s definitely very sad, it’s shameful.

“I can’t believe this, it’s incredible. It’s also scary and sad because everything was fine this morning and suddenly this happened.’

Shortly after 1.30pm, officers with paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and London Air Ambulance attended.

Chief Superintendent Sara Leach, Police Commander for the North West, including Barnet, said: “The whole community will be shocked and saddened to hear of this terrible incident.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the late wife and child, as well as the officers and paramedics who were the first to arrive at what was an incredibly challenging scene.

“Special detectives are working to find out what happened and one man is in custody.

“While they are receptive to what is happening, I would like to reassure those living in the area that at this time there is nothing to indicate that anyone else was involved in this incident.

“I would urge anyone who has seen or heard anything unusual today or in the past few days to come forward and speak to police. Your information could be of crucial importance as the investigation proceeds.’
