Frenkie de Jong is now convinced his future is a long way off Barcelona and is keen on a move to Manchester United.
The Dutchman has been put up for sale by the Spaniards, who are desperate to raise funds to keep their high annual debt low.
De Jong, 25, initially told the board that he didn’t want to leave the Camp Nou and that he was already at his ‘dream’ club.
Despite the presence of Erik ten Hag, de Jong’s initial reaction to Manchester United’s interest was not overly positive as he would rather play for a club in the Champions League if forced out of the club.
However, Sport claim De Jong has made a change of heart and is no longer opposed to leaving Barcelona.
It is claimed that the former Ajax midfielder has finally grasped the reality of the situation and is excited at the prospect of returning to his preferred position under Ten Hag and building the Theater of Dreams team around him.
A deal is now reported to be in its ‘crucial phase’ but Barcelona are awaiting a transfer fee of around £86m for De Jong.
That’s significantly more than United are willing to pay as the club values De Jong at almost £60m.
United are yet to strengthen their squad this summer while rivals Liverpool and Manchester City have added Darwin Nunez and Erling Haaland respectively.
