Supporters of the Catalan club rallied outside the club’s training ground on Thursday to shout at De Jong as he arrived amid question marks over his future, with Manchester United and Chelsea heavily linked with the midfielder.
United have been chasing the Netherlands international all summer, agreeing a £73million fee last month, although so far De Jong has declined a move to Old Trafford despite Barcelona trying to force him out the door.
The situation is complicated as Barcelona owe de Jong around £14million in deferred wages due to financial uncertainty at the La Liga club, a fee that any buying club is expected to collect.
United’s inability to convince De Jong or settle the salary issue has opened the door for Chelsea in recent weeks, with the west Londoners now also on the verge of agreeing a transfer with Barca.
Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly spoke directly to De Jong about a potential move to Stamford Bridge but didn’t get the response he was hoping for.
Happy and settled in Barcelona, De Jong doesn’t want to trade the sun and beaches of Catalonia for Manchester either – as he’s unwilling to be relegated to the Europa League.
Despite this, some Barcelona fans berated him on Wednesday, ordering him to cut his salary and calling the 25-year-old a ‘B***h’.
On Thursday, some supporters still urged him to ‘lower his salary’ but the majority urged him to stay at Barcelona.
Cash-strapped Barcelona are increasing pressure on De Jong to leave the club, even telling him last month they had found “evidence of criminal activity” linked to the contract extension he signed in October 2020 – as another board was responsible.
Barca also fail to register some of their signings until they sell more players and lower their payroll, with fans now starting to annoy those players who don’t want to leave.
