Banchero scores 31 points as Magic wins in Boston for second straight year – Boston News, Weather, Sports

BOSTON (AP) — Paolo Banchero scored 31 points and Admiral Schofield had 11 of his 13 in the fourth quarter to help the Orlando Magic wrap up a string of back-to-back games in Boston with a 95-92 win on Sunday.

Franz Wagner added 12 points and Bol Bol had 11 with eight rebounds for Orlando, who were down 1-1 on the road before their two wins over the Celtics at TD Garden.

It extended Magic’s winning streak to six games, the longest since March 2019.

“It means a lot to come out in this environment and get two wins in a row against this team, a great team,” said Banchero. “I think it means a lot for our confidence in the future. We know we can compete against anyone. We just have to keep the same focus.”

Jaylen Brown led Boston with 24 points, Marcus Smart had 15, and Grant Williams had 14.

“We just have to come straight from the gate with high energy,” Smart said. “We come in very sluggish and then try to wake up, then we get ourselves into trouble. It will happen. We get it. You will have such games.”

Celtics star forward Jayson Tatum missed the game for personal reasons. The 24-year-old is the team’s best scorer (30.2 points) and rebounder (8.2) and fifth in the standings.

Boston center Robert Williams III was playing his second straight game after missing the first 29 following surgery on his left knee in September. He had six points and five rebounds in 17 minutes.

The Celtics hit 12 of 47 on 3-point attempts.

“I like the shots we got and no, you’re not adjusting your approach,” Boston interim coach Joe Mazzulla said.

With Boston trailing 93-92, Smart stole the inbounds pass and went down. He called a 9.8-second timeout before the Celtics flipped him at the other end.

Moritz Wagner sunk two free throws with 5.3 seconds left before Grant Williams edged a 3-point try from the left corner up front.

Grant Williams had a put back and was fouled, hitting the free throw that gave Boston a one-point lead with just under four minutes left, but Banchero hit a 3 on the Magic’s next possession and they were never behind again.

“They believe and they understand that they’re doing it on committee,” said Orlando coach Jamahl Mosley. “This is how this team has to be: courageous, tough and fighting for each other.”

Boston had cut it to 93-92 on Malcolm Brogdon’s 3, but Markelle Fultz grabbed the rebound on Banchero’s miss and Orlando called the timeout.

Boston lost Friday’s game 117-109.

Stuff the Magic Dragon, the Orlando mascot, was part of a sports-themed group that was on site for Children’s Day. It received a series of boos when it was shown on the Jumbotron.
