Baker Says MBTA Will Focus on Finding Dispatchers as Agency Cuts Subway Service – Boston News, Weather, Sports

BOSTON (WHDH) – Gov. Charlie Baker said he believes MBTA can quickly make improvements called for by a damning federal government report, even as the T significantly restricts service across subway lines.

The Federal Transit Administration is investigating the T following the death of Robinson Lalin in March and numerous other safety issues, and on Wednesday issued four special directives calling for immediate action before releasing its final report. The guidelines criticize operations control center staff who work 20-hour shifts and return to work after just a 4-hour break, and 80 percent of subway dispatchers who lost their safety certifications at some point.

“One of the things they said was because you need more dispatchers, you need to find or train some people who have special skills in shipping,” Baker said Saturday. “I think that’s going to be a big focus of the ‘T’ from that point forward.”

As part of its response to the federal orders, MBTA is cutting service on subway lines starting Monday because they don’t have enough dispatchers to handle regular operations. The new timetables are:

Red Line: The Ashmont and Braintree branches run every 14 to 15 minutes instead of 9 to 10, and trains between Alewife and JFK run every 7 to 8 minutes

Orange Line: Runs every 10 minutes in the morning, every 8 to 9 minutes during the day and every 11 minutes at night

Blue Line: Runs every 7 minutes until 9:00 am and every 8 to 9 minutes the rest of the day.

Also starting Monday, the Green Line’s B branch between Boston College and Kenmore will be closed for 12 days, with shuttle buses carrying passengers.
