whirl over. Clayton Echard and Susie Evans broke up six months after the dramatic Season 26 finale The bachelor.

“It is with an incredibly heavy heart that we wanted to announce that we have decided to go our separate ways. Anyone who has ever loved knows that this was a painful decision and was not taken lightly,” they wrote in a joint statement on Friday, September 23. “We understand there are likely to be many questions about this decision – social media is definitely a highlight and many of our shared experiences have been kept private as I’m sure most can understand. But we will share this – while this last year together has brought us so much joy and so much laughter, there has also been a significant amount of pain. We know that no healthy relationship is without struggles, but we realized that we were unprepared for the outside forces that were preventing our ability to heal not only as individuals but as a couple. We’re both focused on continuing to work on ourselves so we can be the best version of ourselves.”

The couple continued: “This is not an easy time for either of us but we support each other and hope the other finds happiness and healing. Although Claysie no longer exists, we hope our communities can support us individually as we move forward with love and respect for one another. Thank you to everyone who has supported our relationship. It means so much more than you will ever know. ❤️”

The news comes a month after the two announced they are moving to separate states, with Clayton moving back to Arizona and Susie moving to Los Angeles after living together in their native Virginia Beach.

The former football player, 28, and the videographer, 29, met while filming his season of the ABC dating series, which premiered in January. Susie got two one-on-one dates and made it to fantasy suite week, where the two faced a major roadblock. When the Virginia native revealed she wasn’t comfortable with Clayton being intimate with the remaining two women, the retired athlete admitted he had sex with both of them Gaby Windy and Rachel Recchia. He also told each of the finalists that he was in love with her.

“I don’t even know who I’m looking at anymore,” he said before sending Susie home during their blast argument. “You just dropped a bombshell on me and I don’t agree at all with the way you did it. I think it’s BS… I’m sorry I even raised my voice. It’s because I cared so much, I really loved you. … Anything you say to me at this point is no longer important to me, so I’ll get you out.”

Susie returned in the second part of the finale after Clayton left both 31-year-old Gabby and 26-year-old Rachel, whom he had introduced to his parents in Iceland. Despite the Missouri native’s best efforts, Susie dumped him at the final rose ceremony and left the series on her own.

“I had to make this decision for myself. It was the best decision I could have made. … [But] I’ve always loved Clayton. I always had love in my heart,” she explained during the After the last rose Special in March, revealing that the two reconnected and began dating after the show. “I loved him as a person before I ever fell in love with him.”

That bachelorette Alum, for his part, told the host Jess Palmer that the ups and downs were”[a] A thousand percent” is worth it in the end. “She impresses me more and more every day. And she keeps giving me reasons why following my heart was the best decision I could have ever made,” Clayton gushed. “I couldn’t be more in love with this woman.”

Following the season’s twisted conclusion, the reality stars opened up exclusively Us weekly that they felt “there’s nothing wrong with the way we’ve approached the process” — despite Bachelor Nation’s strong opinion.

“What we could have done better was just have more empathy for each other and be able to understand the other person’s perspective while we were in that moment,” Susie explained in March. “But our minds were living in other realities at that point. And since then we’ve been able to come to the same reality, but when you’re there it’s such a tough environment and we’re just happy that we can get to the other side and be as happy and confident as there are now.”

So much for Clayton’s love for Gabby and Rachel, who will both lead season 19 of The Bachelorettesaid the University of Missouri graduate Us that “it got to the point where I was only in love with Susie” and he was only “in love” with the others.

“I think you can only be in love with one person. You can fall in love with many, but you can only fall in love with one,” he added. “And that’s where I made a mistake. I was confused on the show and believed I was in love with several women, but I’ve since realized that I don’t believe that.” Bachelor Clayton Echard, Susie Evans Split
